I originally wrote the song Lady Liberty in 1986 to honor the Centennial of the Statue of Liberty. Now that our belief in the democratic principles of the statue have been reconfirmed, it is a fitting time to once again sing the lady's praises. The man shown in the video is Frédéric Auguste Bertholdi, the artist who made the original model. If I may, I would also like to take the time to thank the French people not only for this wonderful everlasting symbol of freedom and democracy, but also remind all Americans, that without the help of the French Navy and the French soldiers, George Washington would never have been able to defeat Cornwallis at Yorktown; which is how we gained our independence.
Lyrics:LADY LIBERTY
She was a gift from across the sea,
Sent on the wings of an ocean breeze,
She traveled all the way from France,
And she came to this land of democracy,
Where people tried to live in harmony,
A place to be free a last,
And no matter where the people came from,
She held her light for everyone,
She said if you've got no place to go,
America will be your new home,
LADY LIBERTY she still stands proud and free,
The torch still burns bright in her hand,
And the lamp by the golden door,
Gives hope to the tired and poor,
So ring bells of freedon for
LADY LIBERTY, LADY LIBERTY.
With hopes and dreams in every heart,
The immigrants came to make a new start,
They journeyed from so far away,
But there in the dawn or the dead of night,
When Lady Liberty came in sight,
There was joy on every face,
And no matter where the people came from,
She held her light for everyone,
She said if you've got no place to go,
America will be your new home,
